Polish Dragon Myths

KRAK, a Polish hero in the year 700, came to the rescue of the town of Wavel which was being ravaged by a huge birdlike dragon with immense purple wings. Krak stuffed a sheepskin with salt peter, sewed it shut and left it as dragon-bait. The dragon ate and was overcome with thirst, he guzzled half of the River Vistula and burst. Krak stayed and founded the city of Krakow on a hill overlooking Wavel.
