Primary Level Activity #5
Read the enclosed story of the Phoenix. Have students create a
picture of what they think the Phoenix looked like. Discuss the
story with the students. Why do you think the Phoenix destroys
itself every 500 years? Why does the new Phoenix arise out of
the ashes of the dying parent? How is our world like the Phoenix?
In what way does Re-use remind us of the Phoenix's story.
Divide the class into groups. Have each group create a diorama
(a picture in a Box) of one part of the Phoenix story. The dioramas
can be displayed in a series to tell the whole story. To create
the diorama, use a medium sized cardboard box and remove the top.
Turn the box on its side to create a stage for the picture. Have
the students paint the background on the inside of the box. Using
only reused materials, they create the phoenix and any other necessary
props to go into the scene. Each diorama represents one part of
the Phoenix's story.
