Primary Level Activity #1

Introduce the topic of Recycling by reading 'The Lorax' by Dr. Seuss to the students. This story is short enough to be read in one or two sessions. Talk about the events of the story with the students. Have them try to identify areas of our environment, which are destroyed through pollution (water, air, earth). Have them identify ways in which these elements of our environment can be harmed. Create word lists on cards that students can use in both speaking and writing about this issue. Ask the students to look around themselves at school. What evidence of pollution can be seen? What can be done to help reduce the problem? How can we, as a class let others know of the problem? What suggestions can we provide to help others reduce the problem? What can we do ourselves? Can we create a personal conservation plan?

At another session, the discussion can extend to our homes and the same issues raised as above.
