Junior Level Activity #7
"Arising
Phoenix" is a work of art that addresses the issue of saving the
environment. The artists have used many different vehicles for
presenting their message to the audience. Before attending the
performance, ask the students to try during the performance to
answer to themselves the following:
What is the message the artists are presenting?
How do each of the following help to convey that message:
materials used
instruments used
sounds made by the artists
movements of the artists
After
the performance discuss the answers to the above questions in
whole group. Have students write a short response paper in which
they present two things about the performance that they liked,
two things in the performance they did not like and whether they
thought that the presentation was successful in imparting its
message. Each point made must be backed up by specifics heard
or seen in the performance.
