Junior Level Activity #6
Divide the class into groups. Have each group visit the Arising
Phoenix site on the Internet where they will find many tellings
of the myth of the Phoenix. Have each group research a different
myth and summarise the information that they find under the following
headings:
COUNTRY
APPEARANCE
BEHAVIOUR
RELATION TO MAN
WHAT THE MYTH EXPLAINS
HOW THE MYTH RELATES TO TOPIC OF POLLUTION
HOW THE PHOENIX AFFECTS MAN
Have
each group record the results of its discussion on experience
chart paper so that it may be shared with the whole group. Whole
group discussion could continue exploring the question of what
the various myths have incommon. After the discussion, have the
students individually create a picture in any medium with which
they are familiar of the Phoenix of their choice. Remind students
of the various elements of design they have explored in regard
to picture making. Create a display of the students' artwork along
with a refined copy of some of their small group research.
