Junior Level Activity #5
Rap, in its simplest form, is nothing more than rhythmic speech
accompanied by an ostinato. Divide the class into groups. Using
the model of the nursery rhyme or any other rhythmic poem, have
each group write a rap of several verses. The rap should identify
a specific kind of pollution, its effects on the environment and
what should be done to address the problem. Using found instruments
or non-pitched percussion instruments have one student in each
group accompany the rap with a rhythmic ostinato. Have the rest
of the group develop a simple movement to supply visual interest
to the rap. Have each group rehearse and perform their rap for
the whole group.
