Junior Level Activity #4

Divide the class into small groups of at least 6 students. Using a Mother Goose nursery rhyme as a model, construct a poem of 4 lines in length, identifying a kind of pollution and a possible solution. Have the group perform their poem for the class. Have each group get together and develop 2 contrasting ostinati (repeated word pattern from the poem) to accompany their poem. Each group will then divide into 3 smaller groups, ergo at least 6 students per group. One group will say the poem. Another group will say ostinato #1 and the third group will say ostinato #2.

Each group could also develop a simple movement to accompany the poem or ostinato. When all this has been worked out, the performance of the poem could develop as follows: Group 1 begins ostinato #1 alone twice. They continue and group 2 begins their ostinato with group1. After group 2 has done their ostinato twice, group 3 enters with the poem itself and says it twice. Group 3 stops, group 2 and 1 continue. After two more repetitions, group 2 stops and group 1 continues for two more repetitions at which point they also stop.
