Junior Level Activity #1

Introduce the topic or Recycling by reading 'The Lorax' by Dr. Seuss. Identify the ways by which the Lorax's home was destroyed. In discussion draw parallels with what is happening in our own environment. Under the headings of Air, Water, Earth identify ways in which our earth is being slowly crippled by man's intervention. Divide the class into groups of 5-6 students. Have each group take one of the above headings; find as many examples of pollution of that environment as they can. For each decide on the agent (who is doing the polluting), a possible solution and what action, if any, can be taken by us to encourage compliance. Have each group record their responses on a sheet of experience chart paper. At the end of the session, each group will share the results of their deliberation with the class. This is an opportunity for the rest of the class to respond to what is being presented. Lively discussion should ensue. However, encourage students to respond constructively.
