LockDown: the series

15 Minutes of Fame

LockDown features a series of sculptures created with prison beds from the former Kingston Penitentiary for Women; plus door hardware, air vent diffusers, office dividers and other objects recycled from government buildings.

Initial works in this series were commissioned in 2004 as an art/recycling initiative utilising discarded materials provided by Public Works & Government Services Canada and Correctional Service of Canada.

Since 1985, Amanta Scott has focussed on creating dynamic and interactive art installations with found objects: recycling, transforming, investing renewed value and significance into that which others discard.

Her artistic practice revolves around outreach and the challenge of the unknown: specifically creating art from the diverse resources available to them. Regardless of source materials, whether objects or people, Amanta creates sculptures, installations, sound-scores, video installations and/or performances that engage the viewer and inspire both reflection and participation.

Syncretic Arts Workshop
Directed by Amanta Scott
with David Tomlinson and Philip Drube
in conjunction with the exhibition of LOCKDOWN

presented by Art Gallery of Algoma

Drawing upon their extensive experience with sculpture and performance, artists Amanta Scott, David Tomlinson and Philip Drube guide participants to develop their own interpretations of the artworks and create their personal responses to them through art, sound and movement.

The Found•Sounds•Moving•Syncretic Arts Workshop is designed to augment the exhibition of LOCKDOWN and foster appreciation and understanding for contemporary art: building bridges between art and the public. The workshop encourages participants to use the art exhibition as a catalyst for public presentations integrating voice, percussion, sound, movement and visual arts. The workshop expands the public's understanding of contemporary visual arts by bringing them into the institutions whose mandate it is to build understanding and by bringing the arts into the education arena.

Contact Leading Tone and/or Art Gallery of Algoma to book or participate in this workshop.

Found•Sounds•Moving•Syncretic Arts Workshop is made possible thanks to the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council.
